One to Two Months Before Move

You need to arrange and reserve the van line or rental truck for your move

Select 2-3 of the best quotes provided -- select by service, price and reliability
Contact each provider that provided a quote
Negotiate best price based on quotes from the other providers
Make sure the "truck" will be able to access your new housing

Prepare an inventory of everything you own

Segment your list into three categories
Items to pack and move on the truck
Items that you will move yourself
Items that will be discarded

Items to move yourself should include
Clothes, toiletries, and other personal items while in transport
Special photos, jewelry, and other irreplaceable items
Bank account records, financial certificates, insurance information
Medical and dental records, medical prescriptions, emergency information
Pets and supplies, if possible, food water, records, leashes, crates, special toys
Infants and children's special foods, toys, busy items.

One Month Before Move

Start using up food and other perishables in your home.
You can start packing seasonal and unnecessary items.
Arrange a garage sale for those items you don't need:
Clean rugs, draperies, and clothes so that they can be wrapped and transported
Schedule time to have your appliances serviced for moving.
Arrange for cleaning your new home prior to moving in:

Close to Moving Date

Settle any outstanding bills with retailers, utility service provides, and other local merchants
Arrange for moving help:
Service any vehicles that will be used for moving
Secure parking space for mover
Mow lawn and clean the outside
Drain oil and prepare lawn and other power equipment for moving
Empty propane tanks and clean outdoor grills and other outdoor equipment
Defrost freezers and dispose of perishable food you won't need
Dispose of household hazardous items:
Empty and prepare refrigerator and freezers -- place deodorizers inside to control odors
Clean all other appliances that stay
Obtain necessary travelers checks and other related monies for moving
Arrange for final trash / recyclable pickups
Return leased equipment such as cable converters, phones, and other household items
Arrange care for children and pets on move date
Cancel all home deliveries and services
Arrange a home for your plants, if needed
Moving vans will not move plants if the move is more than 150 miles — also some states restrict the transport of plants from other states

Label each box clearly
List contents and the room where box should be placed; i.e.,  laundry room, kitchen, bath, living room
Place label on side box so that it can be viewed clearly
It is a good rule to label opposite sides of the box to prevent the re-shuffling of boxes when movers stack boxes against a wall.

Moving Bag Items
Pack in your moving bag certain items from your home that will be used during travel and while you wait to unload your truck and connect utilities, probably should be moving BAGS!
Prepare your home for moving

Disassemble computer and other electronic equipment
Remove those items that you will move yourself (load them up in the car)
Be available to oversee and assist movers where necessary:
The mover will check an inventory sheet for each item being moved. They will inspect the condition for each item. Make sure you agree with their comments.

Inspect the home to ensure every item has been packed

Make final repairs and cleaning before closing the door
Travel to your new home
Upon move-in, prepare your home for the movers, remember to arrive at least a day before they do

Identify where in the home items will be placed -- it's a good idea to tape signs to the walls identifying the living room, dining room, bedroom 1, 2, etc.
Remove hinges from doors to allow easy access
Lay trail lanes throughout the home to protect flooring
Make yourself available to oversee move-in and check-off inventory list as instructed
Inspect items as they are delivered to ensure nothing has been damaged or lost

Compile moving expense and other records

Gather and store all home purchase records and home warranties
Compile all related records and receipts for moving
Submit moving expenses to your employer
