Linn Creek is located at 38°2N, 92°41W, the elevation is 686 feet. Linn Creek is located off of HWY 54 east of Camdenton MO.
The first recorded settlement was eight miles east of Old Linn Creek in 1827 by Harrison Davis and his son-in-law Reuben Berry who came to the area from Kentucky seeking sufficient land for their families. The encampment where they pitched their first tents was along the Dry Auglaize, near what is now Chauncey, and close to the camps of three Indian tribes, including an encampment of the Osages. Davis and Berry had brought goods and merchandise which with some negotiating traded to the Indians for the land where they pitched their tents. A year later, in 1828 they moved their families and officially established this first settlement.
The county name was Kinderhook County, in 1843 the name was changed to Camden; the county seat was originally Erie which was originally named Oregon. The county seat soon became Linn Creek but with the construction of Lake Benton (we know it today as the Lake of the Ozarks) in 1929, other plans had to be made because the original Linn Creek business district would be under water. Camdenton became the county seat, several cemeteries were relocated to drier ground and a new bank, café, and post office were built at the site of the new Linn Creek. Both Old and New Linn Creek are shown on the map issued 10-1-1968 by the Missouri State Highway Department. In 1897, Old Linn Creek, known at the time simply as Linn Creek, fell victim to flooding by the Osage River. You can read an excerpt from the New York Times Newspaper here. Old Linn Creek is shown to be located at Section 30, Township 38 N, Range 16 W, while New Linn Creek is located at Sections 7, 8, and 17, in the same township and range.
Linn Creek is incorporated and has an active city life. It also boasts five full and part time police officers. There is also a city park, Linn Creek Memorial Park which the city council hopes to keep improving with time. The city councils message as well as that of it's citizens seems to be to keep Linn Creek a peaceful, family oriented city, that they can truly be proud of.
