Lake Ozark is a city in Camden and Miller County, Missouri, near its namesake, the Lake of the Ozarks. It came to life in 1931. An interesting note is that the town of Bagnell and Damsite prospered during the building of the dam. Bagnell the town burned to the ground (sources vary as to whether it was one fire or several, the town is a collection of houses now) and Damsite just disappeared as did the airport that hosted many VIP's among them Charles Lindbergh. Ozark comes from the French aux arcs which loosely translated in a working interpretation mean rounded hills which is a very good description of the area.
The Bagnell Dam Strip today (which is basically Lake Ozark business district) is famous for a little bit of everything, go karts, good restaurants, moonlit boat rides, and t shirts plus your normal arcades etc, just say I'm going to the strip and everyone knows you don't mean Las Vegas! The author can personally vouch for the kindness of the people there including the entertainers because I was stranded there due to car trouble all night, before the days of cell phones and 24 hour anything but that is another story. A business you don't see every day is nuisance animal trapping but there is one in Lake Ozark that serves the region. Grocery stores and banks are also available along with many fine resorts and condos with all of the usual amenities plus many opportunities for employment in these establishments as well as support businesses. Lake Ozark Regional Health System has a hospital 6 miles away in Gravois Mills. Lake Ozark also boasts an elementary and middle school.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,386, and the median income for a family was $40,515. Males had a median income of $26,750 versus $21,667 for female which is high for the area. Data is from the 2000 U.S. Census.
