Gravois Mills

Gravois Mills was plated January 22nd, 1884.  It had a population of thirty at that time.   Near the town was the Gravois Grist Mills built by Josiah Walton.  The town is named for this mill along with others along the Gravois River.  The latitude of Gravois Mills is 38.308N. The longitude is -92.825W.  It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 682 feet.  The estimated population, in 2003, was 221. 16% of Gravois Mills's residents report German ancestry, and 18% report Irish.  Gravois Mills is in the Osage township, handy for deer permits, etc.   And by the way the word Gravois is a derivative of the word gravier which is French for gravel.

Today Gravois Mills has a bank and several small retail establishments, rental units and a boat launch.  It is a calm peaceful little community close to Jacobs Cave and is served well by both Laurie and Versailles nearby.  The small gravel roads and tributaries around the area show a little of what the lake and surrounding area used to be like.
The National Register of Historic Places lists Old St. Patrick's Church, it was added in 1979 and is also known as The Stone St. Patrick's Church.  Located south  of Gravois Mills on SR 0, Gravois Mills the church is noted for it's architectural and religious significance to the area.

Troutdale ranch near Gravois Mills is another location of interest, purchased by Allen Gates in the mid 1960s; Allen invented the boned method of processing trout. In 2002 Dennis and Merritt Van Landuyt bought the ranch and renamed it Troutdale Farm and have since renovated it.
