History of Eldon

Eldon is a city in Miller County Missouri.  The population was 4,895 at the 2000 census.  Eldon is located at 38°20 N, 92°34 W and the elevation is 925 ft.
The town was previously the farm of Peter Thompson. The earliest burial dates from the Eldon cemetery seem to be from the mid 1820's so it was probably shortly before that organized settlement started taking place. On March 15, 1882, George Weeks filed for township.  Weeks wanted to call the town Almira, after his wife, but there was already a town in Missouri bearing that name.  The name Eldon comes from English origins, from the Duke of Eldon.  A month later what would be known as the Missouri Pacific Bagnell Branch Railroad announced plans to build near Eldon.
Eldon didn't depend solely on the railroad, it was at the crossroads of highways 52 and 54, with the construction of Bagnell Dam, Eldon boomed while the previous steamboat city of Tuscumbia faltered.  Originally the town of Eldon was bounded on the north by North Street, Fifteenth Street on the south, Walnut Street on the west and on the east by Mill Street.
The city of Eldon has been viewed as a gateway to the Lake of the Ozarks because of its location on Highway 54. Eldon currently is the home of many fine businesses, gift shops, insurance, department stores, computer stores, banks, restaurants, and auto parts; there is something for everyone.  Lake Regional Health System has a clinic in Eldon and three colleges offer classes Lincoln University, State Fair Community College, and Columbia College.  Sixteen Churches of various denominations make their home in Eldon. Eldon's City Park is equipped with an incredible pool and waterslide!!  "Friends of Animals," is the city owned animal shelter.
