History of Camdenton

Camdenton is the county seat of Camden County which was organized in 1841 as Kinderhook County and renamed in 1843, for Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, Chancellor of England, and leader of the Whig Party. This county was settled by hardy frontiersmen in 1834 or 1835. The relations of the settlers with the Indians (Osage and Delaware Tribes), who were then in possession of the county were very friendly. Camdenton was incorporated on 29 May 1931. The latitude of Camdenton is 38.008N. The longitude is -92.744W.  It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 1,043 feet.  The estimated population, in 2003, was 2,949.
Linn Creek was inundated by the waters of the Lake of the Ozark's; Camdenton replaced it and was a planned city from the very beginning. Camdenton has no property taxes, a mix of business and residential properties along with a strong emphasis on education.  Camden County R-III boasts teachers with average experience at 12 years.  Also State Fair College and Columbia College have locally available classes in everything from Accounting and Communication to Political Science and Social Science with many other avenues of study designed for the full time or part time student who desires to work while completing their degree. Lake Career and Technical Center is also available for continuing education, job counseling and guidance.  Dogwood Animal Shelter is a private, non profit, "no-kill" facility serving a tri-county area located in Camdenton. The Shelter is funded entirely by sales at the Dogwood Thrift Shop, Membership and Donations, and adoption fees.  I can personally vouch for the helpfulness of the staff.  The town also boasts other than it's proximity to the lake and major transportation routes a Lake Area Regional Health Clinic, Camdenton Rehab Clinic and Camdenton Medical Center and Pharmacy plus nineteen churches.  Of course there is time for fun too with the local gift shops and water park, there is even a water slide in the city park.  There are two golf courses, 3 local caves, and many excellent restaurants.

Ha Ha Tonka (which translates from the Osage dialect to "laughing water") State Park is among Camdenton's local attractions, founded in 1978 it boasts the ruins of a turn of the century castle built by Robert Snyder.  Unlike many businessmen of his time it was said he was the epitome of honor and commercial integrity.   He was said of his Ha Ha Tonka property "Here I will spend my leisure, secure from the worries of business and the excitement of city life. I will fish and loaf and explore the caves of these hills, with no fear of intrusion."  Mr. Snyder met an untimely end as one of the first automobile fatalities in Missouri.

Bridal Cave is another great attraction in addition to the many shops and stores located in Camdenton.  The cave boasts 2,000 weddings hosted in its chapel.  It is also famous for its columns, soda straws and onyx formations.
